William Hoshal: Bio

William Hoshal

Composer, arranger, and performer Bill Hoshal draws influence from the musical worlds he inhabits, including jazz, classical, ambient, and commercial. Originally trained on saxophone and woodwinds, his award-winning music has been featured in jazz festivals and on the concert stage both here and abroad.

A native of the Pacific Northwest, Hoshal's musical roots began in the rich Portland, Oregon music scene and took him to Florida and the east coast where he studied with jazz education luminaries Rich Matteson and Bunky Green. In the 1990's he returned to the west, relocating in the desert southwest where a lifelong fascination with indigenous music and an interest to connect with his own distant heritage ultimately led him to add the Native American flute to his musical language. Influenced by masters like R. Carlos Nakai, Doc Tate Nevaquaya and Robert Tree Cody, he began incorporating the traditions of the flute into the harmonic and rhythmic structures of jazz and contemporary classical music.

His 2007 debut CD, A RUMOR OF THE SUN has just been released on his own Calling Rain Music label.
